images to open up space
Images made by me in individual sessions at Galeria Porta 33 (Funchal). The images represented a personal challenge the person had in that moment. Once the image is made, I help the person decide what to do with that drawing, so as to symbolically/archetypically start triggering a new attitude or perspective on that given challenge. Apart from the session with curator Nuno Faria, no photos were made from the session or the drawings.
There were burnt and torn drawings. There were drawings taken to be buried in a specific forest. There were some that went out to be framed and others whose destiny would be by a symbolic sculpture. For one person, I drew a projective card set based in his life, and he created a way of reading his own cards. We are our own main life-paths creators. A person went out of the session committed to write a herself a letter on top of a drawing representing her body. Another committed to create and send me in four days time an image of a specific new work. Not only was that hand-sewed flag a new kind of creation for her, but it chiefly represented a concrete change she has already been wanting to implement in her life. So, from a certain point onward in this series of ten sessions, I abandoned preconceived notions of what should happen in an images to open up space session, and decided to be focused in using them mainly to give people pretexts to allow themselves doing what they already had been wanting to do.
