meditation: wood woman
oil on 17th Century wood panel. The panel was replaced when a Madeiran chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels was repaired. The Vanda barnesii orchid was cultivated by Pedro Spínola, a producer with hundreds of orchid varieties growing on his grandmother's terrace in Funchal. The female figure, as all in the pencil sketch, comes from the Lapinha do Caseiro. It is a hand carved wood nativity scene from the late 19th century, created by poet Herberto Helder's illiterate grand-grandfather. 130 x 180 cm, 2019
