From the singing scrolls of the Indian Chitrakar, through the Sicilian Cantastoria, the family tree of singing paintings is an uncanny but a long one. SUNG Portraits is a sung painting performance that starts from an in-depth conversation with an individual, during which a painting is made to reflect the interviewee's soul. In the final stage, the language of contemporary music machines meets some ancestral sound practices to create a unique song from that painting and person. Both the painting and the recording of the song can be for the interviewee to take home. The song can be done in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
When in a Festival or performance arts setting, Daniel V. Melim culminates the private talking-painting sessions with a public presentation where he sings the paintings for the individuals in the presence of an audience.
Project started with the support of: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Binaural-Nodar, CAPC, PENHA SCO, A Música Portuguesa a Gostar Dela Própria, Alma d'Arame and CasaBranca - Associação Cultural
