For sete-estrelo, his first solo exhibition at Monitor Lisbon, Daniel V. Melim will present a new body of works on different wooden objects: from a one century old bed headboard, a chess board and a small piece of furniture. Through the use of an often lightened up and vivid colour palette, Melim repurposes these wooden objets trouvés and turns their surfaces into open windows through which we can access his visual imagery. In these representations, which evoke above all the night of his homeland (Madeira), we find coastal cliffs, golden roots and small wooden sculptures from the 19th Century. In these works, Melim articulates a plethora of references and stories coming from different fields of knowledge. In his images, vision is intended to be a transformative experience. In fact, each image in the show plays a part in a meticulously crafted exhibition narrative that acknowledges the existence of a powerful and mysterious intelligence that no discipline can define.
